If you are planning on using your video footage for legal purposes, Don't plug it into your computer unless you have software geared towards recording a CCTV camera.

A video card in a PC will only record the video. This ''raw'' video is not admissable in court and the majority of law enforcement officials cannot even use it as evidence anymore. If this video is recorded in a CCTV digital video recorder or enterprise software on your PC, it will come equipped with a tamper detection feature, watermark, and encryption of the stored video. All of which is now needed to make surveillance video as legal evidence.

With the rapid growth of video-vigilanties, many new laws have passed on legal video evidence. Recording audio is prohibited in many states unless the subject is made aware, or there is visable signage informing the person (s) that audio is being recorded.
